Prostate cancer support group PROSTAID Calgary (403-455-1916) announces its next general meeting on Wednesday, February 21st, 2024, at CKE Community Centre, where Dr. Lin Yang will discuss how Thai Chi practices can be used in cancer prevention and survivorship.

The organization’s latest announcement furthers PROSTAID Calgary’s decades-long mission to provide in-person support to prostate cancer patients and their loved ones through education and empathy. At the upcoming February 2024 meeting, epidemiologist and health sciences professor Dr. Lin Yang will discuss how energy-balancing practices like tai chi can be used to prevent and survive prostate cancer.

According to the Journal of Clinical Oncology, prostate cancer is the most widespread disease amongst Canadian men. Although Canadian health research remains strong, with prominent academic centers in every province and territory, the impact of academic prostate cancer research is not well known.

PROSTAID Calgary’s general meetings aim to ensure the healing benefits of such research are communicated to the populations to whom they most matter. These meetings offer a space where medical guest speakers can report new developments in prostate cancer detection, testing, and treatment.

The non-profit also offers two informal monthly meetings for prostate cancer warriors and for their wives and caregivers, offering networking and personal support opportunities. Attendees can learn from each other’s experiences in managing advanced stages of the disease and inquire about access to clinical trials.

Established in 1993, PROSTAID Calgary has been supporting and educating prostate cancer patients and their loved ones with monthly meetings and online resources, such as their website and journal, “The Digital Examiner.” The organization is also dedicated to raising public awareness of the disease and advocating for solutions on the provincial level.

“Our objective is to assist and support patients, families, and friends by informing, empathizing, and reassuring men on their journey with prostate cancer,” a spokesperson said. “By sharing our experiences with our own cancer, we lift our spirits and strengthen our resolve to fight for quality of life and a cure.”
